R-modes of perfect fluid rotating stars are unstable to gravitational radiation for arbitrarily slow rotation. The presence of viscosity is not enough to suppress this instability in neutron stars. We briefly review some astrophysical implications of the r-mode instability in hot young rapidly rotating neutron stars and in accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-rays binaries.
