The heavy-ion potential is calculated semi-microscopically within the double folding method with various effective n-n interactions (Gogny, M3Y) and applied to fusion reactions relevant for the carbon and oxygen burning cycles in highly evolved stars. Reaction rates at temperatures relevant for such stellar processes are estimated and upon comparison with traditional and modern extrapolation formulas conclusions are drawn regarding the importance of the employed n-n interactions on the corresponding burning cycle.
