Designing experiments to work under the extreme environmental conditions that exist at the Amundsen Scott South Pole base in Antarctica requires considerable advance planning. During the year I spent at the station there were many serious equipment malfunctions due to station power brownouts and blackouts, static, ice crystal precipitation, blowing snow, and poor thermal control. Future researchers are urged to consult with previous South Pole Principle Investigators to get more information about the common recurring problems.
