Gravitational micro-lensing by stars in a macro-deflector (i.e. galaxy) has been investigated for various values of the surface mass density in stars and the shear parameter. Micro-lensing influences the spectra and the brightness of a lensed quasar. Since the source size depends on the wavelength, and the average amplification depends on the source size, an apparent chromatic effect arises. Of particular interest are the sudden changes in luminosity, which occur when a compact source (e.g. quasar continuum source) crosses a critical curve. For solar mass stars and a source radius of 10-4pc changes of up to 6 mag may occur. The authors find that the steepest slope in the light curve corresponds to a change of about 1 mag/day for QSO 2237+0305.
