The unsharp-masking printing technique, designed to compress the tonal range of a modern high-contrast astronomical plate and make possible the study of the brightest and faintest parts of an object on the same print, is discussed. A photograph of the Eta Carina nebula, showing features ranging over a factor of 10,000 in brightness, is presented, describing the technique and its results. The various uses in the area of astrography are considered, noting that it is especially suited in revealing with clarity chaotic nebular structures, and in tracing the spiral structure of galaxies.
