NASA sounding rockets and astronomy have been synonymous for close to fifty years. Sounding rocket flights have made significant contributions both in the acquisition of new astronomical data and the development of orbital payloads. In order to enhance this important science tool there is a need for an improved carrier that will open opportunities for new applications. At a recent sounding rocket working group meeting, one of the most repeated concerns was the need for more photons, which translates to larger diameter and more performance. This paper addresses the performance, operational features and the potential applications using the flight tested Oriole rocket system. The Oriole is the first new sounding rocket motor developed in over 25 years and offers the next generation of sounding rocket to the astronomy user community.
