In 1941 the author was invited by the German authorities to direct the work of the observatories in the Polish cities of Warsaw, Cracow and Lwow. Despite the enormous difficulties of working in war-torn central Europe, the astronomers at these observatories continued with what research they could, particularly the observation of variable stars and the computation of solar system orbits.
