This paper compares the parallel lives of two great contemporaries of
late nineteenth century astronomy - Simon Newcomb in the United States
and Miklós Konkoly Thege in Hungary. Newcomb was the pre-eminent
mathematical astronomer of his day, while Konkoly was a superb
instrumentalist and observer.
