This paper aims to investigate some of the main ideas of the late seventeenth century French writers on astronomy, Pierre Bayle and Bernard le Bouvier de Fontenelle. Bayle's Thoughts on the Comet, in which he is highly critical of anything superstitious or not founded on reason and observation, landed him in hot water with contemporary religious authorities. Fontenelle's famous work Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds was, from the outset, a best seller on astronomy. In it, he reviews the Copernican teachings of his century and the telescopic observations of Galileo and J.-D. Cassini.
