The technology, goals, and implementation of planned experiments in astronomy and astrophysics during the 1980s are previewed. New instrumentation will include all-wavelength data gathering, space-based observatories, and computerized data processing, scanning, and modelling. The detection of hidden mass in the universe is an object of researchers interested in the closure density of the universe, and X ray and gamma ray bursters are as yet of unknown origin. Two- and three-dimensional computer simulations of collapsing rotating gas masses are under development to study the formation of planetary systems, and systematic astrometry to detect spectrographic anomalies which signal gravitational fields of planets around other star systems is outlined. Recommendations are made for construction of the Advanced X Ray Astrophysics Facility, a Very Long Baseline Array, a 15 m New Technology Telescope, and a 10 m Large Deployable Reflector for space.
