A technology development status and performance capability evaluation is presented for large, state-of-the-art telescopic optics and their ancilliary structural support and control techniques. Mechanical and structural design advancements encompass the use of hexagonally segmented/actively-controlled figure mirrors, the polishing of hexagonal mirror segments under stressed conditions, configurations of multiple-telescope arrays, reliance on altitude-azimuth mounts, the exploration of horizontal spinning liquid mirrors, the casting of glass mirrors in spinning furnaces, and the fabrication of monolithic thin meniscus telescope mirrors.
