An IR camera is described and demonstrated with results of astronomical observations of star-forming regions including NGC 2264/IRS1 and NGC 7538/IRS1. The IR camera comprises a 10 x 50-element Si:As hybrid array with a peak sensitivity of 18-22 microns, and near-simultaneous observations are possible in the 10 and 20-micron atmospheric windows. Filters at 8, 10, 12, and 12.4 microns are incorporated in the device with a 18-24-micron broadband filter and K, L, and M filters. The astronomical images of three star-forming regions and several stellar calibrators show bright IR sources and allow the calculation of deconvolved sizes. A scheme is successfully employed to remove an overall dc component and a linear east-west background gradient. Based on the integration times and dynamic range the present system is shown to be of value for the study of bright moderately extended astronomical objects.
