AN upconverter based on a laboratory system1 developed at the Optical Sciences Center (OSC), University of Arizona, has been used to convert infrared photons from astronomical sources to higher frequency quanta that were detected with a pulse-counting photomultiplier photometer. These observations, made at the Coudé focus of the Steward Observatory 90-inch (229-cm) reflector on Kitt Peak, represent the first successful astronomical demonstration of infrared upconversion, although infrared laser heterodyne radiometry has recently been used to detect the Sun2 and α Boo3.
