Public sky survey data have been curated at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh for more than a quarter of a century, from the UK Schmidt photographic surveys and their associated digitisation programme to the digital near-infrared sky surveys from UKIRT-WFCAM and VISTA. In this poster we describe the current astronomical data management activities of the Wide Field Astronomy Unit (WFAU) in Edinburgh, focussing on the development and operation of the WFCAM Science Archive and its integration into the developing Virtual Observatory. We highlight some of the challenges which arise in the curation of sky survey archives 100s of TB in size, and discuss the solutions to them developed to date by WFAU staff with an eye to the coming generation of PB-scale surveys. We also examine the possible methods for accessing these large scale surveys from the distributed tools being developed for the Virtual Observatory.
