Past research on cosmic rays and developments in cosmic ray observations are discussed and the origins of cosmic rays are considered. Cosmic radiation and its energy levels are described. The interaction of cosmic rays and the atmosphere and the use of the atmosphere as a cosmic ray collector is outlined. Air shower arrays may be used for detection of cosmic rays as well as detectors which can distinguish gamma rays from charged particles and muons. Possible sources of cosmic radiation and future developments in research are discussed.
