A deep IIIaF plate has been obtained at the prime focus of the AAT which shows the candidate star described by Kristian and Westphal (1978) and Crane et al. (1979) near the timing position of the binary pulsar PSR 1913 + 16. The astrometry carried out shows that this star does not coincide with the timing position. High-speed photometry of the candidate shows no evidence for pulsations down to a time-averaged R magnitude of 26.5.
