Spectra of the asteroids 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta (wavelength, 0.32-0.75 micron) have been recorded with a scanner system at 50-A resolution. The internal accuracy of measurement is 2.5 percent or better. An analysis is made of the systematic errors involved in calibrating the data against spectra of standard stars and the sun. Vesta exhibits an absorption band of the Fe(2+) cation, supporting the view that its surface mineralogy is analogous to basaltic achondritic meteorites. In the Ceres spectrum, absorption features identified with the Fe(3+) and Ni(2+) cations imply a resemblance to hydrated phyllosilicates. Such mineral associations are exemplified by type C II meteorites and by terrestrial Ni-rich clays such as montmorillonite.
