Scientific paper
Photometric lightcurves in the V band of 43 Ariadne and 52 Europa have been obtained. Pole positions of these asteroids are derived from these observations combined with results from other apparitions. Twenty-two reliable pole determinations have been compiled and compared to numerical results obtained from a study of a simple three-dimensional system of colliding bodies. It is difficult to obtain reliable statistics with such a small set of data and selection effects cannot be excluded, but asteroid spin axes do not seem to be randomly oriented. Some hints of the initial distribution of asteroid spins may still remain in the present distribution.
