Near-term asteroid mining and economical manned missions to Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars, are reviewed. Phobos and Deimos (PhD) appear to represent key initial steps in industrializing space utilizing asteroidal and lunar resources, paving the way toward an explosive human renaissance in space. More than any other space mission concept-present or future- PhD fulfills the full gamut of rationales: scientific, technological, economical, political, and spiritual.
