During its lifetime, the Lowell Near-Earth-Object Search has produced large numbers of single-night observations. Unless these few observations corresponding to a single object are linked to other observations within, say, a week, the objects are considered lost. Until recently, the rigorous linking of small numbers of observations was almost impossible, as no suitable method existed.
We have developed a method for the identification of observations within, say, a week of discovery, based on efficient comparison of ephemerides. Assuming predefined observational errors, a tentative identification is indicated if there exists an orbit tying the observations together. As it is inefficient to perform orbital inversion using a trial and error scheme for every possible identification, probable candidate pairs that need to be checked more accurately must be filtered out from the population containing all possible pairs using a fast and reliable method. Probable identifications are found by searching for overlapping ephemerides that have been computed for three common epochs from two separate sets of observations. Efficient interpretation of large amounts of data is achieved by using a so-called address comparison technique. An n-dimensional phase space is discretized into a one-dimensional sequence of integers, which is used in the search for common addresses; i.e., overlapping ephemerides.
Using the novel identification method, we will scan through LONEOS archives for new linkages.
