A model has been derived of the spin vector of the asteroid 243 Ida on the basis of ground-based photometric observations of seven apparitions. Predictions are calculated for the flyby geometries of two equally likely solutions for the spin vector, with a view to the resolution of spin-vector ambiguity by Galileo spacecraft images. The morphology of the present lightcurves for Ida indicates a nonuniform albedo distribution; it is found impossible to uniquely predict the distribution of albedo variegation.
