The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a near-infrared imaging camera that will be used to identify, acquire, and track guide stars in order to fine point the Observatory. Selection of guide stars and field identification will be performed by using the Guide Star Catalog 2 (GSC-2), which is the most comprehensive all-sky catalog of guide stars for supporting space astronomy missions. Because GSC-2 is a photographic survey, we extrapolate the properties of the catalog into the near-infrared by comparing it to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Point Source Catalog. We analyze 13 one-degree-radius regions that cover a range of Galactic longitudes and latitudes that were observed by all three surveys. We develop a 3-color GSC-2 to J, H, and K transformation that will be part of the JWST Guide Star Selection System.
This work was supported by NASA contract NAS5-03127 for support of the JWST Science and Operations Center at the Space Telescope Science Institute. P.C. is supported by CSA under a PWGSC contract.
