Terrestrial Planets: Formation
Scientific paper
An outstanding issue concerning the conventional scenario for final terrestrial planet formation from the isolated protoplanets is that the giant impacts generally lead to modest eccentricity in the merger products. We investigate the effect of disk depletion and find that the eccentricity is excited through a sweeping secular resonance and is damped by a tidal interaction with the gas disk. With the separation between the excitation and damping processes, planets can attain small eccentricities analogous to our Solar System.
