We use the ASCI code ARES to explore the differences between 2- and 3-D instability growth in massive star supernova envelopes. It has been shown quite convincingly that 2-D simulations are incapable of mixing Ni throughout supernova envelopes to the degree required by observations. 3-D instabilities are known to grow faster than 2-D instabilities due to different convergence histories, and so might offer another avenue to mix Ni further. We will explore such simulations using single- and multi-mode sinusoidal density perturbations that are either in phase or random in phase, as well as totally random density perturbations. Late time heating due to local energy deposition by decaying Ni will also be explored as a possible contributor to mixing in 3-D. All simulations are done on the ASCI Blue-Pacific and ASCI SST machines at LLNL, with the largest simulation encompassing 35.6 million zones running on 1920 processors of ASCI SST. This work was performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under contract number W-7405-ENG-48.
