A stratospheric balloon with optical sensors on board can measure starlight during the occultation of a star by the earth. A procedure is described for analyzing the data; this procedure is valid even if the altitude of the optical sensor varies during the measurement period. The theoretical explanation considers the principle of the procedure, refraction, and inversion.
