We report on ASCA observations of the cataclysmic variable BY Cam. The unexcelled energy resolution of ASCA in the vicinity of the iron K line allows the line strength and energy to be constrained more tightly than has previously been possible. We show that the iron line consists of three components, consistent with highly ionized, nearly neutral, and intermediate ionization components. We discuss the likely origins for each of these. We show that the neutral component is consistent with the expected flux from reprocessing in the white dwarf photo sphere, and also that it is consistent with the limits on a soft blackbody continuum component from the white dwarf. The high-energy component is consistent with emission from the accretion shock, and it provides evidence for a high (≃30 keV) temperature for the shock. The intermediate ionization component may originate in the accretion column, with the ionization being primarily due to photoionization from the emission at the shock. We also test for modulation of the various continuum and line components at the orbital period.
