The ENVISAT ASAR provides an enhanced capability with respect to the ERS SAR, particularly in terms of spatial resolution, coverage, range of incidence angles and polarisation diversity, which is the result of an advanced system design based on an active antenna, offering large flexibility of modes of operation and including a more complex internal calibration loop. One consequence of this advanced system design is the need for a more sophisticated processing strategy on ground, able to handle data acquired in multiple modes of operation, each one demanding a different processing strategy in order to meet the established quality and application performance requirements, and capable to exploit the antenna internal calibration information for deriving the required processing parameters, such as the chirp replica pulses. Some other processing stages require special consideration as the FBAQ decoding and the Doppler accuracy in ScanSAR processing. The processor compensates, as well, for instrument gain variations and performs noise power computation to generate calibrated products. This paper shows the validation results of ASAR processor at different processing steps and the different procedures followed for each mode of operation to meet the product quality requirements.
