Extended observations of the binary X-ray source Vel X-1 (3U 0900-40) have shown a pattern of absorption dips in the X-ray light curve. These are interpreted in terms of attenuation near to shock fronts in the accretion wake formed by gravitational focusing of the primary stellar wind by the compact X-ray secondary. Evidence is seen for both the primary shock, as previously reported by Ariel V observations of Cen X-3, and for a secondary shock lying on the up-wind side of the compact star.
