The paper reviews the program of measurement and interpretation associated with the output of the hard X-ray sensor aboard Ariel 5, with emphasis on distinguishing various forms of power-law and thermal spectra. The sensor, a CsI crystal scintillator detector covering the range from 26 keV to 1.2 MeV, is described in detail. Observations are reported for the Coma cluster source, several galactic-center sources, the Crab Nebula, Her X-1, and the transient sources A1118-61 and A0535+26. Hard X-ray observations are discussed along with possible production mechanisms for the black-hole candidates A0620-00 and Cyg X-1. The Cyg X-1 transition of May 9, 1975, is examined in terms of an inverse-Compton acceleration model that is analogous to the Fermi acceleration mechanism for cosmic rays.
