The amount of argon and potassium in fossil materials was measured with mass spectrometric technique. In some cases K-Ar-ages could be calculated, which are however low compared with the present time scale. Diffusion experiments suggest a low argon retentivity of fossil specimens. The fossilization process is decisive for the use of fossils in K-Ar-dating. Only one sample from the Trochitenkalk in Württemberg has an age very close to the value expected (188 m y).
