Potassium content in the Martian interior and in the superficial layer, and radiogenic argon content in the planet's atmosphere, are analyzed. The mass balance for daughter argon-40 in the planet's lower atmosphere is calculated. A model designed to account for radiogenic argon input into the Mars atmosphere is constructed on the basis of argon contents arrived at via different techniques, the mass balance of argon-40 formed in the planet's interior, and a comparative study of atmospheric argon production mechanisms in the terrestrial planets. The model places atmospheric argon at about 50% the argon content in the Martian mantle, and about 5% the argon content in the crust, which accounts for roughly a third of the total amount of radiogenic argon formed throughout the planet's history.
