Man's effect on the world's climate is assessed in the light of the past record of climatic changes and a look at the various human activities. These human factors include energy production, accumulation of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere due to burning of fossil fuels, the release of freons and other trace gases capable of altering the radiative balance of the atmosphere, modification of the ground related to food production, and deforestation of intertropical forests. New components of the future world climate system are predicted on the basis of an extrapolation of these activities. The main conclusion is that if man does not change his development policy, the average surface level temperature of the atmosphere will have increased by 4 C by the year 2040.
