We present a spectroscopic analysis of a limited sub-sample of the 400 circularly symmetric compact sources recently discovered in the MIPSGAL 24 micron Legacy Survey images. A small fraction of these rings, bubbles or shells have already been identified as known objects from comparison with existing catalogs of Planetary Nebulae, Supernova Remnants and other types of evolved stars; however the remaining blobs are yet of unknown nature.
A further analysis of the GLIMPSE (3.6 to 8.0 microns) and MIPSGAL (70 micron) images indicates that the bubbles are mostly detected at 24 micron only. The absence, for most of these objects, of a counterpart at wavelengths shorter than 24 micron could be interpreted either as a sign of extreme extinction, which would explain the non-detection of these objects in previous visible or near-IR surveys, or as intrinsic properties of the objects. Morris et al (2006) used Spitzer/IRS to observe a bubble similar to those of our sample and found that the object is entirely composed of ionized gas and that the MIPS 24 broadband image traces [O IV] 25.89 microns emission solely. Their interpretation is that the source is most likely a distant dust-free young supernova remnant.
