The observability of bursts of gravitational radiation generated by the coalescence of supermassive black holes in merged galaxies is discussed. The expected rate of such hypernovae is calculated to be of the order of one every 10 yr. This event rate, only weakly dependent on cosmological model, constitutes a minimal estimate of events in the vicinity of 0.001 Hertz. If the binary relaxation time is on the order of the current age of the universe, then hypernovae will give rise to more intense, and higher frequency, bursts of gravitational radiation than previous estimates.
