The magnetic fields of soft gamma-ray repeaters and anomalous X-ray
pulsars have been estimated, taking into account the appreciable
increase in the deceleration of the neutron star if it is embedded in a
dense interstellar medium. These estimates yield the usual values of
B⋍1012 G.
