Reports of metric type~II (slow--drift) bursts are commonly used for space weather studies; care is needed in the definition of these bursts. Many radio observatories report type~II occurrence times, frequency ranges, and shock speeds inferred from the burst drift rates but often the reports disagree. In addition to the "classical" type~II bursts, i.e. well-defined, narrow-band bursts consisting of a fundamental band and its first harmonic, there exist other slow drift phenomena, which may or may not be physically related to type~II shocks. Often the slow--drift bursts are embedded in other forms of complex activity, especially in groups of type~III bursts or in complex continuum emission. Sometimes the top edge of this activity drifts downwards at a rate characteristic of type~II bursts. Groups of closely spaced type~III bursts occasionally display strong brightenings that slowly drift downward in frequency. Some slow--drift features are single bands of emission extending from type~III bursts. All of these phenomena must be radiation from structures rising through the corona at speeds in the range of 200--2000 km/sec, but which of them should be reported as type~II bursts? Examples of these different types of emission will be shown and their associations with solar energetic particles and coronal mass ejections will be discussed.
