According to Silveira Filho and Ribeira (1971), the Araguainha impact crater (Brazil) is an eroded complex crater, produced by a meteoritic impact 246 Ma ago. It is composed of a central nucleus of granite, surrounded by tectonically deformed Paleozoic sediments. This paper describes the central area of the Araguainha uplift on the basis of field observations and presents chemical-composition data of the rock samples collected in 1984 and 1988.
