The question is investigated of whether a proposed relationship between the occurrence of abnormal quiet days (AQDs) and solar activity persists for data obtained at stations situated under the equatorial electrojet. To this end, geomagnetic-field values measured at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Trivandrum, India, are analyzed. Field values measured at Alibag, India, are also examined to compare the Addis Ababa and Trivandrum data with those from a station just outside the influence of the electrojet. It is found that the effect of the electrojet is sufficient to reduce the occurrence probability of an AQD at the three stations and that AQD occurrence at Addis Ababa exhibits an anomalous or subdued relationship to solar activity in comparison with that at the other two stations or at three European stations. This relationship is attributed to some unknown characteristic of the evening electrojet. It is concluded that the percentage of AQDs occurring at a particular station shows a direct latitude dependence that is probably not due solely to the electrojet.
