It is pointed out that current models which are proposed for the pulsating transient X-ray binary system A 0538-66 imply an apsidal-motion period which, according to the 'classical' formula, may be as low as about 150 yr. Such a short period should show up as a small but significant difference between the sidereal binary period and the accurately known outburst cycle of 16.6515 + or - 0.0005 d since the latter is attributed to periastron passage. Therefore, after a single accurate determination of the sidereal binary period (which is, in principle, possible because of the presence of the fast pulsar), the apsidal-motion period can be immediately calculated. This would given important information on the internal structure of the massive, post mass-gaining B star in this system. A discussion of the evolutionary stage of A 0538-66 is given. It is concluded that the system is rather old in the sense that the X-ray pulsar is spun back up to it present very short rotation period.
