Consideration is given to the quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse approximations for the two refractive indices and the two wave polarizations in a cold magnetoplasma. For both the case studied by Appleton (1932), where only electrons are effective and the electron collision frequency is assumed independent of electron velocity, and for the more general case when positive ions are allowed for, it is shown that certain commonly used forms of the approximation are incorrect. Correct formulae are presented for the Appleton case, and the behavior of these forms is compared with that of the incorrect expressions for the case of ordinary and extraordinary waves in a collisionless cold electron plasma.
