Analytical expressions for the border approximation and the cubic polynomial approximation are given for a homogeneous molecular scattering atmosphere. We report expressions pertaining to the following three different types of illumination: (i) a unidirectional beam of light incident at the top, (ii) isotropic radiation incident at the bottom, and (iii) isotropically radiating internal sources. These expressions involve X- and Y-matrices (and functions), moments of the elements of these matrices, and the matrices (and functions) occurring in the factorization of the phase matrix. The presence of a Lambertian reflecting ground surface underneath an atmosphere, unidirectionally illuminated at the top, is also taken into account. Numerical results are reported for the border approximation, the cubic polynomial approximation and the exact radiation including polarization in a molecular scattering atmosphere. These results pertain to unidirectional illumination at the top of an atmosphere bounded below by, respectively, a black and a totally reflecting ground surface.
