A comparison is made between the polynomials of the best rms approximation (BRMSA) to the geopotential, corresponding to the earth surface, the sphere enveloping the earth, and the circular polar orbit of a satellite. It is shown that the coefficients of the same solid spherical functions in the BRMSA polynomials corresponding to the earth surface, the enveloping sphere, and the satellite orbit are different. It is concluded that this should be taken into account in developing a unified model of the geopotential based on observational data referred to different regions of space.
