The paper examines the problem of comparing harmonic polynomials representing the best rms approximations of the geopotential in different regions of space where observational data are available. Certain concepts of approximation theory are described which are used for this comparison. Results of the comparison of harmonic polynomials corresponding to different spheres enveloping the earth are presented.
