Details of the approximation of celestial bodies by a triaxial ellipsoid
are presented with particular application to Phobos. It is concluded
that the use of a triaxial ellipsoid as the volume model leads to a
better perception of celestial bodies of complex shape and to a
reduction of distortions connected with the imaging of the surface.
