We show how the dynamics of many continuous driven dissipative systems can be approximated by cellular automaton avalanche models. We then show that the magnetic field of solar active regions is an example of such a system. Thus, simple cellular automaton models can be used to model the complex dynamics of the magnetic field. This explains why the avalanche model of solar flares developed by Lu and Hamilton is able to reproduce the statistical distributions of solar flares.
