This study presents an analysis of Praesepe and the Pleiades clusters from Schmidt plates and Hipparcos data. A complete Schmidt image reduction package has been performed. Plate images are processed through a multithreshold algorithm allowing a good object deblending. Astrometric reduction, using Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues, provide positional accuracies better than 0.1 arcsecond for the whole set of objects detected on the plates. Relative proper motions, derived from different epoch plates, have a precision of 2-3 mas/yr when using a 40 year baseline. Photographic magnitude precision is of the order of 0,1 magnitude. 22 Schmidt plates, covering 36 square degrees, was reduced in the Praesepe region. We selected more than 1000 cluster candidates from B and R magnitudes, positions and proper motions of 100,000 stars. 400 out of them are new candidates. Completeness of this selection is B=21 in a central 25 square degree region and B=19 outside. We also selected 33 Praesepe members from the Hipparcos Catalogue. The cluster distance derived from them is 176 +/- 6 parsecs. A preliminary analysis of 15,000 stars in a 9 square degree area in the Pleiades supplied a set of 442 cluster members out of which 60 are new candidates. The mass segregation is clearly visible. Luminosity and mass functions of Praesepe have been determined. The mass function does not follow a power law, as it is observed in the solar vicinity, but it presents a lack of faint stars.
