In an era when ``Faster, Better, Cheaper'' has become an overused and hackneyed expression, the phrase advanced technology has primarily been associated with the faster and better aspects of the troika. Advanced technology is rarely associated with cheaper, primarily due to the cost of non-recurring engineering associated with development. This paper discusses how the Thermosphere ∘ Ionosphere ∘ Mesosphere ∘ Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) program is utilizing advanced technology to lower the cost of Mission Operations & Data Analysis (MO&DA). MO&DA is a manpower-intensive activity which is typically left out of cost-reduction exercises, partially because MO&DA costs are incurred post-launch when cost concerns are no longer an issue or it is too late to implement changes to reduce costs. The TIMED program has focused on MO&DA costs early in the conceptual and preliminary design stages (Phase A/B), while there is still an opportunity to utilize front-end funding to lower back-end costs. Innovation in the TIMED operations concept has lead to the development of event-based commanding as a means of lowering operations personnel and hence post-launch MO&DA costs. The utilization of GPS as a prime driver for event-based commanding is key to the implementation of this low-cost operations concept.
