The compensated pulsed alternator (CPA), a large rotating machine that will convert mechanical, rationally stored energy into a single electrical impulse of very high power, is discussed. It is being optimized for driving flashlamps in a very large NOVA Nd:glass laser system. A circuit that will provide start-up current and assist in triggering the flashlamps is described and tested with a 200 kilojoule capacitor bank. Formulae that will assist in matching the flashlamp load to any given size CPA machine are also presented.
