The theory of linear filtering is outlined for the case of white noise. The optimum filter and its transfer function are discussed, along with a simple mathematical expression for the transfer function. The theory is applied to high-dispersion spectra of the K giant Delta Tauri. It is found that linear filtering has only a very small effect on the line profile.
