The effectiveness and relevance of the terminal descent velocity criterion in synthesis of Mars landing trajectories is argued against objections voiced in the literature. The universality of the criterion is validated for spacecraft using a jet propulsion soft landing system in the synthesis of optimum trajectories through the rarefied Martian atmosphere. The terminal velocity minimum is arrived at for a fully specified trajectory angle which is independent of spacecraft parameters or imposed restrictions. Further confirmation is sought in the results of investigations of optimum trajectories using the criterion of minimum characteristic active soft landing speed at which the optimum points coincide.
